The Buzz About Bees

In this episode, host Angelina Le Grix got the buzz about bees from beekeeper Wayne Pitts.

First, she learned how he got involved in beekeeping, how to handle a swarm, and some basic bee biology. This segment is available on YouTube as Bees and Beekeepers.

In the Beehives and Health segment, Wayne also explained the science behind colony collapse disorder, and how local beekeepers are treating the mites thought to cause it, without using chemical sprays.

As we learn in the segment Harvesting Honey, local honey not only provides health benefits to those who eat it; but bees provide a vital service as pollinators. About 30% of all foods require pollination - so we'd starve without these hard-working insects.

To top it all off, Wayne also demonstrated how to prepare one of his favorite dishes, Honey-teriyaki salmon.
