Healthy Food. Healthy Body. Healthy Planet.
Healthy food is what we would all prefer to eat, isn't it? We want tasty meals and snacks full of fresh flavors, not full of chemicals. But how do we know that the foods we eat, and serve to our families, are safe, healthy, and humane?
We're so busy - with our commutes, our families, our jobs - that the simple pleasures of growing flowers and vegetables, cooking from scratch, and sharing a leisurely meal with family and friends seem like luxuries from far away and long ago. Even trying to navigate the marketing claims - all natural, organic, low-fat, family-farmed, cage-free, fair trade, etc. - can be time-consuming and frustrating.
And yet, eating is perhaps the most sigficant thing we each do as individuals that affects not only our own quality of lives, but the quality of our air and water, the lives of food growers, and the lives of future generations. No matter what else is on my to-do list, the one thing I do every day is EAT. So I figure that whatever time I invest up front to understand where my food comes from, to learn how to make better choices, and to build good habits into my daily life is time well spent.
Fortunately, the journey towards healthier eating is fun. It's more an adventure than a chore. And my life is becoming more like a movie about a year under the Tuscan sun than I ever imagined, without my ever having to leave home. Feeling better in my body, and at peace with my shopping choices, is its own reward. But for a food lover like me, the best reward is how wonderful healthy food tastes.
I hope to nudge you on your own journey by providing useful, easy to find and understand information on a variety of food-related issues. In tasty, bite-size peices.
