Solar Cookers

Bite-size Green TV host Angelina Le Grix speaks with Solar Cookers International board member Michael Mora.

He explains the non-profit’s work in the developing world, addressing six major problems

  • Deforestation
  • Respiratory illness from cooking over wood stoves
  • Danger to women and children leaving villages and refugee camps to gather firewood
  • Time and energy spent on firewood gathering instead of farming, income earning or schooling
  • Illness and death from contaminated water
  • Money needed for food, schooling, and other basics going instead to buy cooking fuels
with remarkably simple, affordable technology.

Together they look at 3 popular models of sun cookers: the HotPot, Sport, and Cook-It. These are used abroad but are also a wise addition to any home emergency survival kit.

Angelina demonstrates how to cook several scrumptious dishes, including: ratatouille over polenta.  And, for dessert, strawberry-rhubarb crisp.  To watch just the cooking demonstrations, visit the page for the recipe you want to learn.
